description: The world is split into capitalist and bureaucratic categories of society in which patriarchy assumes charge of our social institutions. Although some places and their inhabitants flourish,the other half is left unnoticed, uncared for, and forgotten. Third-world nations are directly impacted by these structures; informal settlements are their dramatic and terrifying scenario, where families are left behind to fight for survival and hope for a better life. Brazil is part of this unfortunate fairy tale that never appears tohave a positive outcome, being one of the largest third-world nations in Central America, with a low per capita BDP, lack of living conditions, high birth, and death rates. The informal settlements look like exotic tourist postcards, but their reality is far from what those postcards reflect. As a citizen, I chose to base my thesis on Brazil for personal reasons, also as a person born with several privileges, I felt drawn to those who were in the crossfire. I feel like it was my duty to learn and support my community, it was time togive them a voice, and perhaps a new chapter with a better beginning. This thesis studies and discusses the terror and instability of environmental impacts in Curitiba-PR, Brazil and howarchitecture can be used as a [peacemaker] and a healing instrument to aid and strengthen the community. It analyzes the existing conditions of the Belem River and suggests a reconnecting of the street grid into a green corridor, as well as the river revitalization with the introduction of an urban ecology center design that incorporates the needs of the neighborhood.
