description: There is a large population of young adult renters in Boston who often struggle to find places to live due to the cost and competition for housing. This leaves renters with apartments that do not fit their needs and no way to change their space. Architecture should be flexible and designed to respond and adapt to the residents needs easily. Flexibility is achieved in this new housing typology with compact individual units that quickly change to fit the residents daily life patterns as well as community spaces that allow for the residents to expand over and interact. These units are adaptable through the use of one central space with two walls that hold different furniture and program. By opening a partition wall and furniture sliding in and out, residents can change their unit instantly to any layout in the central space. Outside the private space of the unit there are community spaces that range in scale from small hallway gathering areas to double height living rooms. Program that the unit cannot support, these community spaces provide as they allow residents to take over and use them as an expansion of their apartments. Through the blurring between private and public community space this new housing typology allows renters to have more autonomy over private space as well as community spaces to support socialization and larger programs. By re-envisioning how using the principles of flexibility can change housing – this could be applied to other housing typologies that affect families and seniors. The key criteria is reshaping the relationship of private space to communal spaces.
