description: Boston’s lack of monuments that highlight African Americanhistory evidences a willful forgetfulness. The absence of a history - that includes participation in the slave trade - contributes to the continued marginalization and oppression of African Americans to this day. This thesis explores how a series of interactive installations dedicated to confronting the city’s suppressed past might better inform residents and visitors. These ‘monuments’ engage the human body, posing the inhabitant into expanded or contracted body positions; studies show that these positions increase or decrease levels of confidence or stress. In that moment, the architecture literally changes the way someone feels. Specific body position also orients an inhabitant’s line of view, establishingengagement with other monuments or confronting a void - the lack of a historical marker. The network of many installations will create significance, as connections between new installations and their context will expose the past, revealing a narrative neglected from the history of city.
