Since the industrial age, technologies whichcontrol thermal comfort such as heat and airconditioning, have brought many advantages. The efficientuse of active thermal systems is dependent on bothisolating the inside from the environment and the use ofenergy resources. Can we effect the isolation and energyneeds of modern built design by looking to the past beforethese mechanical systems were in use? This thesis interpretsthe elements of vernacular courtyard not as a legacy of thepast but as a set of tools which can be renewed to achievethermal comfort. A series of explorations of courtyardattributes which influence thermal comfort leads to creationof a “toolkit” of elements. Design iteration demonstrates thesynergies that combining multiple elements will provide. Itbecame clear that courtyard design can ultimately provide aconnection to the outside environment while offsettingenergy costs. Through the review of published works ofmodern architects, local site data, modern materials andtechnology, the courtyard design is reinterpreted to meet thechallenges of modern design.
