description: Ganvié, a lake village on the coast of Benin, Africa, where domestic, economic, and agricultural activities thrive on the water of Lake Nokoué. Daily, twenty-thousand people use the lake’s water to relieve themselves, to clean themselves and their homes, and to provide food for themselves. Economic and agricultural industries revolve entirely around fish farming. However, the major body of water has experienced bacterial pollution as result of density of activity, and continues to contaminate the Atlantic Ocean, to which it connects. By containing fecal matter and separating fish farms from open waters, the lake and its connecting waterways will be able to regain a rich diversity of ecological systems. By combining methods of aquaponic farming and living systems, excess fecal matter will be organically transformed into a surplus of fish and plant foods for the people of Ganvié. The system will employ a new social outreach in which excess fecal matter ensures an ongoing surplus of food. Architecture will be held together by essential resources from the collective, for the collective. Public water houses and open platform space will thrive on systematic performances generated by water collection and water usage.
