description: Conductivity, temperature, and depth sensors (CTDs) are instruments primarily used by oceanographers to observe trends in various depths of the ocean. CTDs use the salinity of the water to determine the conductivity and the underwater pressure to see how deep the sensor is. They help oceanographers determine trends and can be used to determine ocean climate and changes over time. This information can interpret sustainability of ocean life. While this is mainly used by research institutions, the general public does not possess the means of acquiring these instruments on their own. State-of-the-art CTDs use robust castings and extremely accurate sensors, which makes these devices expensive with the least expensive ones being $6,000. As new sensor technologies are created, CTDs need a means for updating and integration to not become obsolete. Oceanography for Everyone created an open-source environment to give the public access to materials needed to build their own CTDs.The purpose of this project is to help make these instruments more accessible, user friendly, and as accurate as possible while still remaining cost effective. Our intention is to implement bluetooth communication with the device through a graphical interface. This would allow the user to access the data collected by the sensor without having to compromise the waterproofing by having to remove the secure digital card (SD Card) where the data is currently being stored. Finally, we will introduce our improvements to the CTD sensors which will be implemented into WHOI’s system. Our work and test data will be available for use by others on Oceanography for Everyone’s Open-Source environment
