description: Traditionally architects will design a building and later attach signage for navigational purposes. Sometimes architects will go as farto include graphic designers and wayinding throughout their buildingduring the schematic phase. Why, however, do we as architects forcewayfinding techniques to a design, when instead, the architecturecould just inform navigation and direction itself?The site focus is on the Prudential Center and Copley Center on Huntington Avenue in Back Bay, Boston. This site was at the forefront ofmy mind when researching orientation and wayfinding. Many usersfind this large mass confusing and hard to navigate, and it does notfit in with the urban fabric that surrounds it. As I began to dissect thecurrent issue and implement new solutions I found that the two towers, the Prudential Tower, and 111 Huntington, act as beacons to thecity of Boston and could be implemented to direct this new system.Throughout explorations of graphic design, wayfinding, and architecture, it has become clear that urban fabrics such as Boston are noteasily navigated. Urban masses, such as the Prudential and CopleyCenter, interrupt this navigational sequence and make it difficult forusers to cirulate around Back Bay. This thesis will test different dynamic ways of how to organize space, create better circulation andsequence, and overall create a better centerpiece for the area of BackBay, Boston.
