description: The stair is one of the oldest and richest architectural elements in terms of its possibilities in form, geometry, and function. At its core, the stair provides its user an essential vertical transit between floors in any multi-level building or procession across a sloped landscape. But, breaking from these confining chains of function, the stair reveals itself to us as a catalyst for movement, a poetic medium of design, and an element of deep experiential quality; both in literal and metaphorical terms. This poeticism and movement are thus condensed at the stair, reincarnating the element as the threshold for the human experience in architecture.The stairs we encounter today however have lost their significance as once expressed in historic architecture due to their technologically advanced, mechanized counterparts that have influenced and changed the way me move vertically. This loss ofmeaning is of great concern, as it has resulted in monotonous designs absent of emotion, poeticism, and connection to their users and spaces around them. This thesis asserts itself at the precipice of where poetry and architecture collide and works to combat the loss of architectural significance, once again poeticizing them and their ability to move and bring people together.
