description: Through the sectional overlap of spaces designed for harm reduction and rehabilitation,this project imagines how architecture can support individuals battling opioid addiction.One of the most important aspects to consider in the treatment and recovery of a personsuffering from addiction is a strong support system. By combining different models ofsupport, such as outpatient facilities and supervised injection sites, the goal is to createspaces that reinforce the feeling of community. This feeling of community, as a result,facilitates the support of others and guides one towards the help that they need. Thedemonization of mental illness and addiction often leads those afflicted to avoid seekingspaces for rehabilitation. Without this aid, many become stuck in a cycle that rotatesthem between addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. Nowhere is this more evidentthan on the mile stretch of Massachusetts Avenue between Melnea Cass Boulevard andTremont Street, colloquially known as “Methadone Mile”. This Thesis proposal combinesharm reduction and rehabilitation programs, designed to invite those suffering fromaddiction into a safe environment where they can be safely monitored, with what I callan Architecture of Recovery. This type of architecture spatially bridges, through visualand aural connections, those who are currently utilizing harm reduction methods to theprograms of rehabilitation that they otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to.
