description: As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the way in whichthings are made is rapidly changing. Technology and digital infrastructures have become integrated into everyday life, makingconnectivity seemingly instant. Ideas and information are harvested and analyzed to rapidly inform the next technological iteration. Labor and social structure have shifted changing our interactions with physical space. This has placed pressure on the process of making and instigates a new model for making. Contemporary technologies have provided opportunities to proceed in dynamic directions colliding disciplines together and opposing the linear and contained procedures of yesterday. Yet with the digital and physical tools of connecting at our fingertips, reality reveals the ironic disconnection within the design world today. There is a vast imbalance between the institutions and industries that own and covet high tech equipment and the actuality of who and how they are accessed. Facilities sit as untouched gems in a black box with limited external awareness as to what they contain and how one can access them. Traditional siloing between disciplines continues to reinforce these social barriers stifling cross pollination and, subsequently, the immense potential for innovation. As a society of makers, we now have opportunity to redefine the future by challenging existing social, economic, and institutional structures. By merging people, equipment, and facilities into one collective network, the antiquated walls of obstruction dissipate. A hybridized architecture of digital, physical, and social structures brings connectivity to users expanding possibilities to what and how we make.
